HISTORY + ART = PEACE

HISTORY + ART = PEACE is a MARP project funded by the Government of Canada. This project is designed to address hate motivated information, activities, behaviour on social media, in schools, and public spaces that target young people. Prejudiced behaviours and practices have far-reaching consequences, both personal and societal. By synthesizing school and community learning, HAP builds a sense of commitment among our youth. In using youth art activism and voice, HAP public exhibition - Spark, Imagine, Peace - will inspire dialogue and reflection of personal and shared Canadian values to combat and prevent hate victimization.

Field of Serenity.jpg
Field of Serenity
This painting has three girls sitting in a field of dandelions looking out towards a sunset. They are in blue to symbolize their calmness, knowing in this world they will no longer have to experience the pain they went through. I painted them in a field of dandelions because dandelions represent resilience and perseverance due to their ability to grow even in difficult climates. As these spirits look on to the sunset, they look towards future days, months, even years, knowing that they are safe in the new world.

Echoes of Emotion.jpg
Echoes of Emotion
Each face in the painting represents a different emotional state: grief, anger, confusion, despair, and resilience are captured through expressive brushstrokes and a very vivid, contrasting color palette. Echoes of Emotion serves as personal and historical reflection. It invites viewers to reflect on their own identities and emotions, especially those shaped by culture, history, and memory. Through this work, I hope to create the space for remembrance, understanding, and the ongoing healing of generational wounds.

Game of Wars.jpg
Game of Wars
Game of Wars presents tanks, planes, and soldiers arranged across a gold and black chessboard symbolizing how war transforms human lives into expendable pieces in a grand, calculated game. That’s why the figures in the artwork do not have faces. They stand for how war takes away a person’s identity and humanity. The board suggests an invisible system of power where choices are made far from the battlefield. This work invites the viewer to consider who holds power, who suffers the consequences, and how easily violence can be disguised as order.

Love.jpg
Love
The drawing is meant to depict a mother holding her child, both wearing a red cloth around them. The background shows war and destruction, whilst the foreground represents love, hope and new beginnings. The mother and child are also heart-shaped, and combined with the red it is meant to represent very strong love. The child also is a symbol for new beginnings, and in a sense, the mom is placing hope in the child, hope for a brighter, better future.

A Gift of Peace.jpg
A Gift of Peace
My art piece shows a young girl, hoping and peaceful, giving a paper crane to a soldier. He is shown in colour, representing the spread of peace and hope from the girl. The two other soldiers beside remain cold and empty, waiting for the gift of peace to reach them. My artwork is a reminder that peace does not have to start with something big. It can begin with one person, no matter the size of the impact they're trying to make. The smallest gesture will start a chain reaction that brings hope and peace to others.
