Gerri is a former long-time School Trustee who served with the Toronto District School Board, chaired the Ontario Public School Board Association, and was President of the Canadian School Boards Association. She also chaired the Citizens Council for the Provincial government to advise on ethical issues concerning the Ontario health care program. She initiated the Genocide Curriculum and championed the Indigenous Curriculum at the TDSB. When she visited the site of the Nanjing Massacre in China and the House of Sharing in Korea she became determined to bring the knowledge of WWII in Asia to Canadian students.
